How Can I Check for Liens on a Used Vehicle in Boston?

I’m currently looking to buy a used car from a private seller here in Boston. The car looks great and the price is fair, but I want to make sure there are no hidden issues especially any liens on the vehicle.

This is my first time buying from a private party, so I’m a bit cautious. I’ve heard stories of people buying cars only to find out later that there's an outstanding loan tied to it. I definitely don’t want to end up in that situation.

Does anyone know the proper way to check for liens on a vehicle in Massachusetts specifically Boston? Is there a state website or a service you recommend? Any advice or steps would be super appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure if this is a BOT post or not, but here goes nothing.

If they aren't able to give you the title when you hand other the money, that is a great sign they have a lien on the vehicle. No title, no sale.

I've done car sales with people who have liens, and we worked together to make sure the title was at a specific branch of their bank the day we finalized the deal. That way you are in a safe(ish) location when you both sign the title (assuming Massachusetts is somewhat like Indiana).

Honestly, if the seller isn't disclosing they have a lien/clear title then I personally wouldn't go much further with the sale.

Sounds like a smart move—what kind of car is it?

In MA, you can request a title or lien check via Mass.gov or go to RMV, but it’s a hassle and sometimes slow. A faster method is running the VIN through InstantVINReports — it’s affordable and pulls lien data alongside title info, accident history, and more.

Just Google InstantVINReports, drop in the VIN, and you’ll know right away if there’s a lien before you hand over any cash.
